Some information I found..... (Week 2)

I've went through a few websites, and I think it quite informative. So why not I share with you guys right?  Well, I got this from British Council Website:

Bottom-up processing happens when someone tries to understand language by looking at individual meanings or grammatical characteristics of the most basic units of the text, (e.g. sounds for a listening or words for a reading), and moves from these to trying to understand the whole text.

Without a doubt, I can relate this to my experience when I was forced to take a foreign language class and was force to at least got a D for it. I took Spanish, and the masculine and feminine thingy is making me crazy! I think my lecturer used Bottom Up approach when she was teaching us last time. I can make meaning with familiar words from a long text but most of the time I'm wrong about the actual meaning....lol.

Like what British Council written in their website, learners focus on word form and not meaning.

So what about Top-down?

Here's what they write:

Asking learners to predict what a newspaper article might be about from the headline or first sentence will encourage them to use top-down processing on the article.

This brought me back to my Spanish class again where I used my background knowledge to predict what the article in the textbook were trying to say. As we are using textbook from Spain, the context differences are clearly there. As expected, sometimes  we are so lost and some context mentioned in the book.

For me, I think teachers should use BOTH approached to teach language as it is the most ideal way of learning from words to meaning and background knowledge and context.  That'a all folks, thanks for reading again!
