Week 5 (Schematic Knowledge)
This week, Dr. Ikhlas continue on reading strategies, and this time it's on schematic knowledge.
For example:
For example:
1) Text to self
2) Text to world
3) Text to text
2) Text to world
3) Text to text
Eventually, this was proposed by Keene and Zimmerman (1997), where they stated that students comprehend better when they make different kinds of connections.
1) Text to self
Text-to-self connections are highly personal connections that a reader makes between a piece of reading material and the reader’s own experiences or life. An example of a text-to-self connection might be, "This story reminds me of a vacation we took to my grandfather’s farm."
2) Text to world
Text to world Text-to-world connections are the larger connections that a reader brings to a reading situation. We all have ideas about how the world works that goes far beyond our own personal experiences. We learn about things through television, movies, magazines, and newspapers. Often it is the text-to-world connections that teachers are trying to enhance when they teach lessons in science, social studies, and literature. An example of a text-to-world connection would be when a reader says, "I saw a program on television that talked about things described in this article."
3) Text to text
Text to textReaders gain insight during reading by thinking about how the information they are reading connects to other familiar text. “This character has the same problem that I read about in a story last year,” would be an example of a text-to-text connection.
Other than that, Dr. Ikhlas also showed some procedures or steps for reading:
- Stage
One: Initial Questions
- What
do you think this is about?
- What
clues in the article helped you? Or
- What
information led you to think that?
- Stage
Two: Probing Questions
- Participant
Response in Stage One: “I don’t know”
- Can
you give me any guesses?
- Can
you describe what is happening?
- Can
you tell me anything else?
- Participant
Response in Stage One: Change and/or Tuning of Schema
- What
made you change your mind?
- What
information in the article made you change your mind?
- Retelling
All in all, I think there are many strategies in reading a text, strange that i never been exposed to all these strategies when I was in secondary or taking MUET. I personally find it useful and interesting because I dont have to read the whole text. Should have know that earlier isn't it?
